Phone Terms, Clearly Explained
Phone shopping shouldn’t feel confusing—but terms like unlocked, filtered, Android Auto, or open phone often make it that way.
This guide was built from real customer questions. We’ll start with the most important definitions, then walk you step by step through carrier compatibility, phone types, access levels, and features, so you can confidently choose the right phone.
Phone Terms You Need to Know
What Does an Unlocked Phone Mean?
An unlocked phone works with multiple carriers. You can insert a SIM card from Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile (as long as the phone supports that network) and switch carriers without replacing the device.
A locked phone only works with one carrier and cannot be used elsewhere unless it’s unlocked later.
Unlocked vs Locked Phones
- Unlocked: Buy the phone and choose your carrier separately
- Locked: Often bundled with a carrier plan and limited to that network
Unlocked phones give you flexibility and control—especially important for kosher and basic phones.
Unlocked Does NOT Mean Unfiltered
This is one of the most common misunderstandings.
- Unlocked = which carriers the phone works with
- Filtered / Kosher = which apps, internet access, and features are restricted
A phone can be both unlocked and filtered.
⚠️ A locked phone is not filtered—it’s simply restricted to one carrier.
Filtered vs Unfiltered Phones
- Filtered (Kosher): Internet, browser, social media, or apps may be blocked
- Unfiltered: Full smartphone access
Filtering is about content control, not carriers or hardware.
Phone Types: Shape Does NOT Mean Access
Flip Phones vs Bar (Open) Phones
Some people assume “open phone” means unfiltered. It doesn’t.
|
Phone Shape |
Description |
|
Flip Phone |
Opens and closes on a hinge |
|
Bar (Open) Phone |
Rectangular, does not fold |
Both flip and bar phones can be fully filtered or unfiltered. Shape is about form—not features.
